چکیده
s and Conference Proceedings Three trials 100, 101 and four observational studies that included only TBI patients were reported only as meeting abstracts or conference proceedings (Evidence Table 7). One trial reported improvements in at least some neurologic or functional outcomes, based on an undefined scale. The other trial classified each patient’s outcome as a “cure,” a “marked effect,” a “positive effect,” “no effect,” or death. Cure was defined as “conscious, symptoms disappeared, and can care for self.” Twenty-two of 32 (69 percent) in the HBOT group were cured, compared to 9 of 15 (36 percent) in the control group (p < 0.05). The two observational studies were not reported in full. 103 The lengths of followup were not clear and there was insufficient information to rate the quality of these studies. Both reported improvements, one using the GCS (however, no data were reported), and one using the digital symbol test (a mean 12.2-point improvement). Other Nontraumatic Brain Injury

Hyperbaric oxygen in the treatment of patients with cerebral stroke, brain trauma, and neurologic disease.
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy has been used to treat patients with numerous disorders, including stroke. This treatment has been shown to decrease cerebral edema, normalize water content in the brain, decrease the severity of brain infarction, and maintain blood-brain barrier integrity. In addition, HBO therapy attenuates motor deficits, decreases the risks of sequelae, and prevents recurrent...
متن کاملHyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, and Stroke: Summary
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the inhalation of 100 percent oxygen inside a hyperbaric chamber that is pressurized to greater than 1 atmosphere (atm). HBOT causes both mechanical and physiologic effects by inducing a state of increased pressure and hyperoxia. HBOT is typically administered at 1 to 3 atm. While the duration of an HBOT session is typically 90 to 120 minutes, the duration, f...
متن کاملHyperbaric oxygen for neurologic indications--action plan for multicenter trials in: stroke, traumatic brain injury, radiation encephalopathy & status migrainosus.
The 2008 Toronto Hyperbaric Medicine Symposium was convened to discuss research into neurologic indications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2T). Four topics were particularly addressed: acute ischemic stroke; acute traumatic brain injury; brain radiation necrosis; and status migrainosus. Four multicenter trials were designed and proposed to evaluate the efficacy of HBO2T for these indications...
متن کاملNormobaric hyperoxia therapy for traumatic brain injury and stroke: a review.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and acute ischaemic stroke are major causes of mortality and morbidity and there is an urgent demand for new neuroprotective strategies following the translational failure of neuroprotective drug trials. Oxygen therapy--especially normobaric, may offer a simple and effective therapeutic strategy which we review in this paper. Firstly we review mechanisms underlying ...
متن کاملTreatment of nervous system injuries by hyperbaric oxygen: a review of molecular mechanisms
Background and aims: The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of the treatment methods to treat many diseases and injuries such as decompression sickness, wound healing, carbon monoxide poisoning, thermal burns, and nervous system injuries. This article aims to review the possible mechanisms of the effectiveness of this treatment in neurological injuries according to the available studies...
